This is one of the 142 Key Temples.
Built in 537, the temple is located in the heart of a busy urban area. Its most notable feature, the Flower Pagoda, towers over narrow streets and apartment blocks.
It is in many ways a typical temple, with a few special features (see below) that make it stand out. Allow about an hour for a visit (more if you're a temple geek like me). Or while away some time just enjoying this island of serenity in the urban landscape. Admission 5rmb (10 more to climb the pagoda, when open).

- The temple is a short walk from Guangzhou's Gongyuan Qian Metro Station; come out Exit I2 and walk west on Zhongshan Liu Road, then turn right on Liurong Road.
FEATURES:
- The temple is best known for its "Flower Pagoda" (六榕花塔).
- The figures in the main hall are said to be the largest extant ancient bronze Buddhas in the province.
- In a side yard, there's a statue of Su Dongpo (苏东坡), who gave the temple its name, and a Buddha symbolizing Thai-Chinese friendship.
- The Burong Pavilion (补榕亭) with a statue of the Medicine King Bodhisattva (药王菩萨) is surrounded by the temple's famed banyan trees in another side compound.
- Also of note is a hall dedicated to Huineng (惠能), the Sixth Patriarch of Chan (Zen), who was initiated into monkhood at the nearby Guangxiao Si (光孝寺).
